ISR PSS Fest on Cajon Pass CA

ISR is having a contest this weekend for PSS style planes. I'm making plans on joining in the fun. It's a long drive, but its worth it to see all the cool planes. I will have my LEG BD5 flying and hope to get the JART complete for the contest. Of course I will have the other planes of the fleet as well.

I will be leaving Thursday from work and driving to Cajon overnight. I hope to get some flying in on Friday. The contest is Saturday. I stay around for some more fun Sunday, and then hit the road on Monday to be back for work Tuesday. It's about a 15 hr drive. Hopefully I won't run into too much holiday traffic. I will be doing most of my driving at night.

What a great Event

Just rolled back into town after a great weekend at the PSS fest. Lots of fun, decent flying on Friday, camping, and just hanging out.

I left 2:30pm MTN from Fort Collins and drove straight through to the CA welcome center, slept 2 hrs in the FJ and then on to Cajon flying site. I arrived around 7:30am MTN and started charging planes. Phil H. also from CO arrived a short time later and we tried the lift. It was light but built steadily all day Friday. We did have 3 hrs of fog in the morning but it burned off as the lift got stronger.

I maidened the Jart as the first plane for me and the first flight at Cajon. It flies very nice. I flew it alot during the whole weekend. Not during the contest hours as it wasn't a PSS plane.

Friday was the biggest air of the weekend as it blew over 40mph alot of the afternoon. I flew the 48" P51 which is my heaviest plane as far as wing loading but it was still a lightweight compared to the local planes.

I camped on site Friday night and Saturday. It rained a bit Friday night and blew very hard both nights. Temps were in the high 40's to low 50's.

Saturday the offical contest day started out with bad air as the wind was blowing off the hill. It did switch around for part of the afternoon and allowed the lighter stuff to fly. I didn't fly except for the Banana just before the hill was closed to non PSS. The wind was measuring 2.3mph when I threw it out. Lots of comments from the armchair pilots as I preped the plane to fly. I proved them wrong as I immediately hooked a decent thermal and climbed out. Jawdropping!

I then spent the afternoon playing vendor. I sold a bunch of batteries, LMA's, and switch jacks. I also sold a few LEDs.

The wind then turned back away from the hill and they called the contest and announced the results of static judging. I placed 5th in foam category with my LEG BD5. They then did the drawing where I won a LEG P63 Aircobra and the main prize of the drawing a F-80 painted in Canadian Snowbird colors. Plane was built by Brian Laird and painted by Carl Mass Senior. I was tickled pink.

Mark Wacker won the LJ48 in the drawing.

Sunday the wind was still blowing the wrong way so Dave Field and I did some slope scoping further on down the dirt road along the ridge, but we never did find any good lift. We did have alot of fun with the FJ working the dirt bike trails on the way back. I got a few scratches in the paint on the passengers side from brush rubbing against us, but it was all good. It really surprised Dave how well it handled off road.

We then made the group decision to try Little Mountain as reports were coming in that it was more than flyable down there. I packed up all my gear and headed down with the group. It was a nice flying site with lots of tall grass and weeds to land in. I flew the banana, LEG P51 60", LEG 48" BD5, Jart, and the Lumberjack most of the afternoon. Brian Laird flew his bomber and U2 which were very cool looking in the air. Others flew glass PSS most of the afternoon.

I bailed about 6:30pm from Little MTN and headed for home. I made it to Vegas and found a room. I was needing a shower pretty bad and I was ready for a real bed.

After breakfast in Vegas I headed for CO. I went through 2 speed traps where they were pulling many cars at a time, which the Radar detector did its job and warned me to slow down. On my way home I stoped in to Zion and found Ian looking for a place to fly the North wind around 8:00pm. He tried to fly but the electricity in the air reset his radio so we just sat and talked for a bit before I continued on to home. I rolled in just after 10:00pm

Total miles for the trip just over 2000. Most expensive gas $3.36 on the western side of Vegas. Cheapest gas $2.77 in Grand Junction.

Thanks to all for such a great weekend.
